When people ask what is Cirque du Soleil, there are so many different answers. As a recent first time attendee of Cirque du Soleil, I was curious about what the show might offer. Totem shares the story of humans from the beginning of time through today. It more than met my expectations; it truly exceeded them!
Acrobatics, full of exceptional feats and daring escapades, is one fun aspect of Cirque du Soleil’s Totem. The acts have the most amazing and talented performers featured with lots of unique presentations. Many of the presentations are so daring and seemingly impossible, they simply take your breath away. I caught myself holding my breath several times during many of the acrobatic scenes.
The live music and Totem’s soundtrack make quite an impact. The best description of the music is that it gives life to the show. The music changes with the scenes, so it varies quite a bit. The soundtrack is that of a musical; it is so original and because Totem tells the story of human kind it is a combination of music and instruments from around the world.
Cirque du Soleil has the best costumes EVER! Every character has a unique and fitting costume. The costumes are extremely realistic and have the brightest of colors and intricate designs to captivate the audience. There is apparent time and effort put into making these costumes to represent different species in nature and man in various time periods. These elaborate costumes are truly works of art in themselves.
Interesting characters are part of the pizazz of Totem. Each of the characters has his or her own special personality displayed through costume, actions, and scene. There are prehistoric men, Native Americans, current day businessmen, young lovers, and so many more. Character classification really ranges from sweet and innocent to serious and wise while others have you laughing every time you see them.
The set for Cirque du Soleil has to be the most modernized set ever created! One minute you feel the characters are on the water, and the next they are flying through the air in a plane. The use of lighting and a really changeable stage helps capture the different scenes. It’s interesting to see what the stage can become next!
Variety is the essence of Cirque du Soleil. It is like someone took the best possible circus acts that take your breath away and combined them into a musical and paid attention to every single detail of anything that could make the show awesome, and it has all come together with perfection. The effort to make Totem a great show cannot be overlooked; an amazing amount of thought and time has been put into making this show the experience it is.
My final thought is that you need to go see the show before they leave Atlanta. Don’t miss this amazing experience that is unlike any other.
