During a regularly scheduled City Council meeting that was held on Monday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Depot the appointments of Council members for 2013 were chosen.

The 2013 appointments of City Council member’s would stay the same as last year’s appointments.

The Council nominated Al Edwards as the Mayor Pro Tem for 2013.

Mayor Pro Tem Al Edwards remained to report for the Police, Municipal Court, Fire, Zoning Advisory Board, Downtown Development and Main Street Partnership.

Councilman Matt Barton remained to report for the Street, Sanitation, Cemetery, Animal Control, Safety Committee and Recreation and Parks

Councilmember David Hammond still reports the North West Georgia Regional Commission, Electric, Telecommunications and Airport.

Councilman George Crowley will still report the Water and Sewer Operations, Water and Sewer Construction, Building Inspection, Revolving Loan Committee and Schools.

The Mayor and Council also approved the General Government Division and the Utilities Division department heads, and there was no change this year.

Eddie Peterson is City Administrator, Paul Worley is City Clerk, Andrea Bramlett is Director of Finance Utilities & General Government, Garry Moss is Police Chief, Neal Russell is Director of Probation, Lenny Nesbitt is Fire Chief, Kevin McEntire is Director of Public Works, Kimberly Townsend is Recreation Director, Eric Stewart is Golf Professional, Harold Franklin is Superintendent of Golf Maintenance and Suzanne Roland is Department of Developmental Authority and Main Street Director.

The department heads for the Utilities Division remained with Larry Vickery being Direction of Utilities, Jerry Crawford is Direction of Water and Sewer, Jeff Defoor is Director of Electric, Brad Carrick is Director of Telecommunications, David Burnett is Manager of the Engineering Department, Danny Stephens is the Superintendent of Water Treatment, Mark Williamson is the Superintendent of Water and Sewer Construction, John Banks is the Superintendent of Sewer Treatment and Bobby Robertson is the Superintendent of Water and Sewer Maintenance.

Mayor and Council also approved the appointments to the following City positions for 2013: Dr. Bert Vaughn as City Chaplain, George Govignon as City Attorney, Honorable Suzanne Hutchinson-Smith as Municipal Court Judge, Ms. Rebecca Paris as Indigent Defense Attorney and Randy Jackson as Town Marshal.

In other business:
  • Palmer reminded the Council that the Mayor’s Day Conference will be Jan. 26 through Jan. 28 in Atlanta.

  • Palmer reminded the public of a sign variance request by Phillip Beamer for Arby’s Restaurant, of 1098 Red Bud Road. The 30-foot height variance is needed to relocate the existing sign to comply with a Georgia Department of Transportation request. The Zoning Advisory Board (ZAB) will meet on Feb. 7, and the public hearing will be on Feb. 11.

  • Palmer reminded the public of a sign variance request by Haley Stephens, of 1052 Red Bud Road. The variance request is for a 185 square foot sign. Current ordinance allows for a 120 square foot sign. The ZAB will meet on Feb. 7, and the public hearing will be on Feb. 11.

  • Palmer conducted the first reading of an annexation and zoning of R-1 for 8.04 acres at a location of 527 Henderson Bend Road for Tolbert Brooks Gallman. The ZAB meeting will be on March 7, and the public hearing will be on March 11.

  • Mayor Palmer conducted the first reading of a taxicab license request for Isidro Sanchez Barrera, owner, D/B/A: Taxi El Aguila at a location of 820 North Wall Street. The public hearing will be on February 11th.

  • Mayor Palmer conducted the first reading of a beer pouring request for Steve Bayzid at Paisano’s Mexican Restaurant, of 803 South Wall Street. The public hearing was set for Feb. 11.

  • The council set the qualifying fees for the 2013 General Election at $144 for City Council and $1 for School Board. The City Council Post up for election are City Council Post 3, currently held by Matt Barton and Post 4, currently held by David Hammond. The Schoo Board Post are Post 1, currently held by Amy Atkinson, Post 2, currently held by Rhoda Washington and Post 3, currently held by David Scoggins.
