Bre Johnson, a former Calhoun High standout, continued her big day collecting three hits and a pair of RBI’s in the second game to lead the Lady Hawks (3-1) past the Mars Hill team that handed Shorter the 3-1 loss on Saturday.
Johnson drove in her first run in the opening inning, scoring Felicia Morris to put the Lady Hawks ahead early. Morris had doubled two batters earlier as part of a two hit day for the junior.
Morris scored again in the third inning when Whitney Hood picked up the RBI on a bases loaded single.
Mars Hill (5-2) finally got on the score board in the third when Megan Arrington scored with two outs on a Robyn Stanek single.
The Lady Hawks erupted for three runs in the seventh with runs scored by Kendall Johnson, Jackie Castaneda, and Bre Johnson.
The middle of the line up – Morris, Castaneda, and Bre Johnson – tallied seven of the Lady Hawks ten hits while accounting for three of the four RBI’s and four of the five runs. The Lady Hawks stole three bases with Castaneda and the Johnson’s.
Christina Ezell pitched the complete game, striking out seven over seven innings while allowing just the one run to score to pick up her second win on the season.
The Lady Hawks will be part of the UNA Invitational from the campus of North Alabama, where they will play six games in three days, this upcoming weekend.

Shorter 3, Armstrong Atlantic 2
SAVANNAH — The Shorter softball team grabbed the second victory in two days versus No. 20 Armstrong Atlantic, defeating the Pirates in extra innings, 3-2.
The Lady Hawks (2-1) got on the scoreboard first in the home half of the second inning when Bre Johnson led the inning off with a solo homerun to left center field.
No scoring occurred until the top of the seventh when the Pirates Ashley Schwab scored three batters after reaching on a fielder’s choice to tie the game, 1-1.
Shorter was unable to score in the bottom of the inning, bringing on international tie breaker rules – each team starts their inning with a runner on second base.
Armstrong Atlantic (9-2) plated their run when Andrea Dalton dropped a sacrifice bunt with the runner on third to move ahead, 2-1.
Kayla Byrom retired the next two batters to send the game to the bottom of the eighth with the Lady Hawks down by a run.
The home half of the inning lasted one batter as Kendall Johnson launched a 2-run home run to right center field giving the Lady Hawks the walk off 3-2 victory in eight innings.
The Lady Hawks managed six hits off of Pirate pitching, with Kayla Cooper twice reaching on a hit. Maddie Bray pitched seven innings while allowing only the one unearned run while striking out one batter.
Byrom came into the game and pitched one inning in relief to pick up the victory.
