Reinhardt University softball player Maddie Monroe was named the NAIA National Pitcher of the Week after earning Appalachian Athletic Conference Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades for her play from March 26-April 1.

Monroe has garnered AAC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors seven times in her career, but this is the first time she has earned the weekly national honor.

Monroe, a 5-foot-8 junior pitcher from Calhoun made two appearances last week, pitching a pair of complete-game shutouts, including a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts in Reinhardt’s 2-0 conference win over Columbia (S.C.) College.

In 14 innings of work, she allowed just three singles and no runs while striking out 28 and walking two.

Opponents batted only .068 (3-for-44) against her.

Monroe, the AAC Pitcher of the Year in 2010 and 2011, paces the squad in almost every statistical pitching category, including appearances (18), innings pitched (113), starts (16), complete games (15), wins (12), shutouts (eight), ERA (1.30), strikeouts (122) and opponents’ batting average (.200). She has a 12-5 record and has walked just 18.

Within the conference, Monroe ranks first in strikeouts per game (9.72), second in strikeouts, second in opponents’ batting average, third in wins, third in ERA and fourth in innings pitched.

On the national level, she is 12th in strikeouts, 20th in innings pitched and tied for 23rd in wins.

This was the second time this season that Monroe has earned AAC Pitcher of the Week honors.

The Lady Eagles have a 23-8 overall record and are 7-1 in the AAC as they host Virginia Intermont for a double header today.

Monroe was the Rome News-Tribune All-Area Player of the Year during her senior season for the Lady Jackets before moving on to Reinhardt.
