Cross Country: Ashworth leads local teams at Manning Mill

All three local middle schools recently competed in the Tiger Trails Race at Manning Mill.

Ashworth led Calhoun and Sonoraville in both the boys’ and the girls’ race. The Warrior boys finished third overall with 90 points, trailing only Woodland (29) and Adairsville (85).

Cartersville placed fourth with 123 points, followed by Jasper (215), Calhoun (225), Cass (239), Pickens (261), Sonoraville (290), Excel (326), and South Central (332).

Four Ashworth runners earned awards for placing in the top 20. Ulysses Canchola led the Warriors with a sixth place finish, followed by Kenneth Cua (8th), Esvin Garcia (12th), and Eric Garcia (14th).

Woodland again routed the competition in the girls race with 30 points. Cass finished second with 107. Rounding out the rest of the field were Jasper (125), Cartersville (130), South Central (165). Ashworth (222), Sonoraville (266), Pickens (303), and Calhoun (446)

Karen Valencia led the Lady Warriors with a ninth place finish.

“We have a very strong team this year, both girls and boys,” said AMS coach Connie Worley. “Our runners have been training very hard and it shows on race day. I am very proud of them all.”

The boys team is currently third in the region behind Adairsville and Woodland.
