The CMS football team was both lucky and good as they defeated cross-county rival Sonoraville on Thursday.

The young Yellow Jackets moved the ball well behind running back Olico Dennis and fullback Ethan Woodard.

Even when things did not go as planned for Calhoun, events seemed to fall Calhoun’s way. Twice in the game bad snaps on kicks led to more points than should have been scored.

With a 7-0 lead late in the second quarter a bad snap on a field goal attempt led to a touchdown when holder Jarrett Carden completed a 10-yard pass to Woodard in the end zone.

Up 26-0 near the end of the game, the Jackets again had a bad snap, this time on the point after attempt, which led to a 2-point conversion from the same two players.

Calhoun opened the scoring late in the first quarter on a 12-yard run from Woodard. Juan Palmerin’s PAT was good for a 7-0 lead.

The blown snap and touchdown gave the Jackets a 13-0 lead at halftime.

Neither team would score in the third quarter though Sonoraville would threaten, moving the ball down to the Jacket 2-yard line. However, Calhoun’s defense stepped up and forced a turnover on downs.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter Dennis broke free, scoring on a 50-yard run. He would finish with 11 carries for 109 yards.

Late in the quarter Woodard scored his third touchdown of the game on an 18-yard run. The bad snap and 2-point conversation gave the Jackets a 28-point lead.

Calhoun’s defense played well in the shutout, led by a defensive line consisting of Jack Defoor, Easton Trotter, Blaine Anderson and Brandon Miller.

“They were able to get penetration, made stops in the backfield, and focused on team tackling,” CMS coach Eric Rigney said.
