Sonoraville Middle School hosted a tough Cass team in football action on Thursday. The Phoenix fought hard but the Colonials took the win by a score of 22-16.

Cass took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter SMS receiver Hunter Lay caught a short action pass from quarterback Zach Collum and then sprinted to the end zone for what looked like a tying score. However, the play was called back due to a penalty.

The Colonials took the ball in the second half but the Sonoraville defense stepped up to shut them down. A bad Cass snap on the punt allowed the Phoenix to take over at the Colonials’ 20 yard line.

Lay carried the ball twice, scoring on the second attempt, a 14-yard play. Collum then hit Nathaniel Smith for the 2-point conversion and an 8-6 lead.

With 7:07 left in the fourth quarter, Cass scored from 22 yards out and then made their own 2-point play for a 14-8 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Calhoun could not come up with the ball and the Colonials recovered. They would score with 4:11 remaining and take a 22-8 lead.

On Sonoraville’s next possession Jireh Wilson completed a pass to Dustin Edwards to get the team to the eight yard line. Lay then scored on the run. Lay converted the 2-point conversion to cut the lead to 22-16.

The Phoenix attempted an on-side kick but could not come up with the ball. Cass managed to get a first down to end the game.
