Bookworms and reading enthusiasts unite this week in honor of National Library Week.

The Calhoun-Gordon County Library will use this week to focus on trying to get the community to sign up for library cards, according to library assistant manager Janice Burrell.

“We are encouraging people to sign up for library cards,” explained Burrell. “This is a free service; we only charge if you lose your current card, and that’s only $2.”

This week, April 8-14, libraries across the nation will celebrate in their own ways.

National Library Week was first sponsored back in 1958 by the American Library Association (ALA), and is still going strong 54 years later.

This is also a time when academic libraries focus on April as School Library Month.

Tuesday, April 10, was celebrated as National Library Workers Day.

According to the Calhoun-Gordon County Library, this day is for library staff, users, administrators and friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers; Wednesday, April 11, is designated as National Bookmobile Day, a day when the contributions of our nation’s bookmobiles and the dedicated professionals who make quality bookmobile outreach possible in their communities are recognized, and Thursday is Support Teen Literature Day, which is aimed at raising awareness among the general public that young adult literature is a vibrant, growing genre with much to offer today’s teens.
