Members of the Gordon County community, even men, will walk a mile in high heeled shoes in support of Domestic Abuse Awareness and prevention, with all proceeds going to client services at the Gordon County Domestic violence outreach center.
“Every year, domestic violence affects thousands of Georgia families,” said Beth Peters, Outreach Coordinator for Gordon County Domestic Violence Outreach. “Through strong collaboration with other Gordon county agencies and law enforcement officials, our office is working to end domestic violence in Gordon County. We feel every Gordon County child has a right to grow up in a violence free home. We are hopeful this event will heighten awareness of this very important issue.”
According to Peters, the event has been in hosted in Rome, but this will be a first for Gordon County.
Walkers will pay a $10 registration fee and collect sponsorships, said Peters, though sponsorships are not required to walk. All fees and sponsorships can be turned in the day of the walk, but forms may be faxed to 706-625-5510 or emailed to gordonwalkamile@yahoo.com before the event.
All registered walkers will receive a t-shirt, and anyone who wants to purchase a t-shirt may do so.
The walk will begin at the Sweet Spot in downtown Calhoun, Oct. 5, with registration beginning at 11 a.m. The walk will begin at noon. Walkers are encouraged to bring high heels to walk in.
Awards will be given for the best shoes and the person who raises the most in sponsors.
