The announcement was made at a staff reception on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 19.
Kerns was one of three finalists for CPS who is very deserving of this honor.
According to a fellow CPS teacher, “Leslie is a wonderful teacher. She is always coming up with new, fun and engaging ways to teach math to second graders. She goes above and beyond working with students when they have difficulty.
“She works with them during her planning and after school. Leslie tutors students outside the regular school day. Once again showing her dedication to educating all students to be the best that they can be.”
“Leslie is a true Yellow Jacket fan by supporting her former students in basketball, football or whatever sport they are involved in.
“She goes out of her way to bring in community people, like her husband, as guest speakers for bike safety week and fire prevention week.”
Kerns is a member of ADK, a teacher organization.
She also works on a community project of collecting the pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House. She has worked with behavioral challenging students and has done a beautiful job. She is stern, consistent, motivating, encouraging, and loving when needed.”
