Anthony L. Blalock, 33, of 2088 Penelope St., of Atlanta, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after one and a half pounds of marijuana was discovered concealed inside a stereo speaker.

A deputy sheriff with the Sheriff’s Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU) stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation on I-75. The deputy became suspicious upon speaking with the man and ordered a drug sniffing canine to the scene, according to a press release from the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office.

“I’m pleased with the results of the work of the canines, and their deputy-partners, in the past three and a half years in uncovering illegal drug distribution,” said Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston. “These dogs are a valuable asset to my overall strategy in dealing with unlawful drug trafficking in our community. The CCPU has been successful in apprehending violators on our roadways, and working in concert with the Major Crimes Unit in arresting and prosecuting those who choose to import this poison into our community.”

Whew, I was worried about you for a minute rt! Usually you are one of the only ones on here with a valid argument. Guess I couldn't see the forest for the trees! As for my gardening project, don't worry, I have a brown thumb and could kill a rock if left in my care for too long, no this was just, let's say a friend. But that was so many years ago, it may have been legal back then. I'm not sure... Plus it was in the mountains of Kentucky!

happychick – Have no worries, it’s just sometimes I can’t help myself! It sounds as if we’re on the same page when it comes to the ridiculousness of cannabis laws. How many otherwise good folks are languishing away, incarcerated for something that used to grow unnoticed on the roadside? Now, with the quantity in this instance, it appears there will be one more. Some of my brethren can wax eloquent on the evils of cannabis, all the while knocking back their favorite frosty beverage or mixed drink of choice. I remain firm in my view that alcohol has caused more misery and ruin than cannabis ever could (causalities of the war on drugs not withstanding) BTW: stay out of my bean-n-mater patch with that brown thumb of yours!

Way to go! Sheriff Ralston is one of the best choices Gordon County voters has ever made, and manages his deputies, jailers and other staff with high expectations of professionalism! He is firm but fair! He makes no exceptions in keeping law and order, and to my knowledge treats everyone equal. I hope the Gordon County Sheriff's office and the Calhoun PD keep up the vigilance in making and keeping our community safe.

Absolutely! Think of all the people who were saved from overdose and certain death as a result of this seizure.

In this case rt, it's the criminal element. Of course typically you wont overdose on smoking weed, heck we all did it at one time or another in our youth (and yes I inhaled). But that was back when we grew our own to smoke. Nowadays, it can be laced with toxins such as formaldehyde (to give low grade weed a kick), to who knows what. Also, it is still illegal, as much as folks disagree with it, it is illegal and a criminal element. I think marijuana should be legalized, but that doesn't mean I don't want the Sheriff's office doing their jobs. Until it is legalized, I support them fully!

happychick - I really need to find a keyboard that has a sarcasm button. We actually agree on this one. Cannabis laws are a waste of time and resources. Furthermore, Sheriff Ralston is doing an excellent job and Gordon County is a better place because of his department’s work, unless you’re the guy that has weed hidden in his speaker. BTW: I hope the statute of limitations has expired on your little, shall we say, gardening project!!!
