Calhoun Middle School 6th grader, Marley Gentry is back again, with friends, as collection for the fourth annual Marley’s Socks for Kids campaigns came underway Nov. 5.

For the fourth year in a row, Marley has enlisted the help of more than a dozen local businesses and locations for drop off locations. Anyone who sees the brightly wrapped collection boxes around town can donate socks that will be donated to the Voluntary Action Center and go to helping children who need socks right here in the local community.

Dropoff will be Nov. 5 until Dec. 8 at the following locations: Eternal moments pottery, Results Unlimited Gym, Anderson Automotive, Jane’s Beauty Shop, Pak Mail, Dr. Tonya Baker’s office, First Apostolic Ministries of Calhoun, Brian’s Auto Sales, Renegade Athletics, Remax Calhoun, The Doghouse, Baxter/Dean, Shag, Morning Point Nursing Home, P&R Sales, Brighter Tomorrow Daycare, Calhoun Utilities, Sweet Spot, Salley’s Sew Amazing, Calhoun Recreation Department, Tractor Supply, Farm Bureau Calhoun, Customer Rags, Pokey’s, Calhoun City Hall, McAfee Dentist Office, Marley Moo’s Children store, and Firehouse Gym.

Originating in 2009, Marley first collected more than 500, then approximately 900 in 2010 and more than 1,800 last year, and this year’s collection numbers are up to the community.

Marley’s involvement and participation in coordinating and collecting socks to donate helps her fulfill required community service hours at school, but according to her mother, Mandy Gentry, Marley not only gets community service hours, she just likes to help people in general.

Marley and other volunteers helped wrap the boxes set up at a collection sites in hopes the community will contribute to help children have socks in the community.
