On Sunday, January 20 Calhoun celebrated the 84th birthday celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King.

The theme for the 2013 celebration was “Team Work Makes the Dream Work,” and was held Friendship Baptist Church.

“It was a great service, but it was smaller than it was last year,” Walter Harris said. Harris was the one in charge of putting the event together.

The event had an array of different celebrations including medleys, scripture, prayer, interpretive dance, singing and special speakers; Linda Hawkins performed the National Negro Anthem.

Speaking on the theme “Team Work Makes the Dream Work,” was Minister Cory Dixon, of Friendship Baptist Church; and Pastor Willie Floyd, of New Beginning Ministries Church of God in Christ.

“Carol Hatch, recording artist out of Dalton, and Patricia, who sung with the late Judge Marvin Boyles and Jermey Tutt, of Rome, did an amazing job singing, and blessed us with their voices,” Harris said.

The keynote speaker of the hour was Pastor and Author Dr. Christopher Bowen of the Living Tabernacle in Forest Park.

“Dr. Bowen did an amazing job as the keynote speaker, and I hope we can have him come up at another time,” Harris said.

After the spiritual ceremony everyone went to The Fork for the reception, where according to Harris, the staff treated everyone with so much kindness.

“A special thanks is due to Tara Duke, Brother George, Gordon County Civic Club, Marathon Store, Pokey’s, God’s Redeeming Love Church, Pastor Dr. Christopher Bowen and first lady Bowen and their congregation, Pastor Mose Whitfield, Eddie Peterson and the City of Calhoun, Clobal Reseand Consultants, Inc., Dr. Margaret Sherman, Will Ostuw, Calhoun Times, Missionary Janie Aker, Dairy Queen, House Office Products, Inc., Mayor Jimmy Palmer, Jimmy Payne, Mitch Payne, David Hammond, Matt Barton, Larry DeFoor, Jim Lay, Yellow Jacket Drive-In, Rodney Lee Mathis, Little Caesars Pizza, Pastor Michael and Co Pastor Nila Brown of Faith Deliverance Church, Vikki Haygood, Missionary Lula Mae Harris, The MLK Commission Members-Barbara Jackson, Sister Andrea Riobe, Brother Ralph Riobe, Ahmad Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Pope, Winona Hollis, Jerline Poarch, Lewis Mann; A special thanks to the friendship Baptist Church Family and Brother Hiram and Linda Hawkins and the Deacons who made it possible to utilize the church again,” Harris said.

I never knew there was a “National Negro Anthem.” Marvin Gaye, James Brown or Ike Turner? Inquiring minds need to know, after all; a mind is a terrible thing to waste!
