The City of Calhoun is ready, and willing, to help other communities in time of disaster.

Mayor Jimmy Palmer has signed the Georgia Emergency Management Agency Homeland Security Georgia Search and Rescue (GSAR) memorandum agreement.

Now, the city will be able to give and receive aid in times of crisis.

“This is a mutual aid agreement between our selves and some of the other local agencies to help in the case of an emergency,” said Palmer during the city council meeting. “We’ve been fortunate to receive some of the mutual aid in the past.”

This agreement that was started by GEMA allows regional response teams composed of qualified government and public entities, and supplies teams to assist the state and other parties with GSAR personnel, equipment facilities, services, supplies and other resources during an emergency or disaster, according to the Calhoun City Council minutes.

“It’s a pretty valuable asset we have in the community,” added Hammond on Monday.

Palmer is grateful to be able to continue working with other municipalities and organizations through this agreement.

“In an effort to help other communities we are always willing to do so with people and volunteers and so forth,” said Palmer.

This agreement will expire on Jan. 31, 2016.

Don’t be deceived into thinking this GEMA agreement is all about natural disasters. And YES, I did take the time to read it. (Well, most of it) Since there seems to be more interest this time around, I will repost my comment from last month:

I know this will be foil-hat and black-helicopter stuff to some of you; but if you take the time and read the GEMA document that our Mayor pro tem just signed, portions of it are truly creepy! The powers given the government under the enactment of this document basically obliterate the constitutional rights some of us take for granted everyday. BTW: The powers of this document are NOT limited to natural disasters, as the article title would have you think, but extend to basically ANY emergency the government chooses to declare.

In crisis, there is no fence between foes and friends.

People in the South don't need a mutual aid agreement to do the right thing. Look in any store window in town for flyers helping others if you need proof.

Job creation and getting the economy growing are important to the district.

Palmer and Hammond skip logic and reason...again.

Resolve some real problems.

You don't know logic and reason if you think this won't resolve some real problems. I'm guessing you're thinking there won't be any more tornadoes or emergency situations in the future?

This is nothing more than a dog and pony show. Politicians getting together patting each other on the back, "Good job Jimmy," "You're making a difference." Just another bullet on the resume without actually doing anything at all. I guess I should go sign an agreement with the local fire department so they will come to my aid if/when I need it.
