Dr. Bill McCown, Gordon County Schools Superintendent, is one of three finalists in the search for a new superintendent for Rome City Schools.

The three finalists, James Arnold, superintendent of Pelham City Schools; Jeff Bearden, superintendent of Fayette County Schools; and McCown, were announced Tuesday as finalists in the search to replace Gayland Cooper, who is retiring after nine and a half years of service as Rome City School’s Superintendent.

It was an an opportunity McCown said he did not want to miss.

“I am a native of Cedartown, and I have long been a fan of Rome City Schools and their successes,” said McCown. “Growing up in a smaller community, I always appreciated Rome City Schools.”

If McCown is not chosen by Rome City Schools, the Gordon County Board of Education will determine if and how long he will remain under his current contract, leaving the contract drawn up in June to secure McCown’s service with Gordon County Schools for three more years currently unsigned.

If you know someone that works for Gordon County Schools you should ask them about the email they received this past week. It really was a slap in the face to the employees. Gordon County deserves better.

Agreed, both Rome City and Floyd County would not take him. This is unfortunate for the students and tax payers of Gordon County. It will take years for us to recover from his lack of leadership. Shame on the Gordon County Board of Education if his contract is renewed. Please contact you Board of Education members to express your concern. If the Board members don't care they do not deserve your vote.

The Rome City School Board is a lot more intelligent than the Gordon County School Board. This man is a joke to education. Gordon County Schools have lost a lot of good educators to other school systems because of his lack of leadership. What has he done for Gordon County Schools? Allowed the hiring of some principals and assistant principals that have about as much leadership ability as Mickey Mouse, gave himself a raise, tried to jump ship, allowed an uncertified teacher to be hired to name just a few. Anything positive? If a teacher could be honest without repercussions, they would tell you he is not respected at all. Talking with some teachers in that system the morale is so low. Sorry to all Gordon County Schools that Rome didn't hire him.

Holding down a job like that, he must be much smarter than he looks.

Why does everyone hate this man? I understand that no one in the city likes this man for many reasons! Dr. McCown has done so much for our school system. We need to trust in our leadership and not down them so much. GET A LIFE!!!! Pray for him....not down him!

Your prayer is answered Dr. McCown did not get the job in Rome. Actually, he is ok. The biggest problem in the Gordon County School system is the incompetence of the HR Director and he will take no action, just ask the administration.
