The Georgia Department of Education (DOE) School Nutrition Program has awarded Sonoraville Elementary School with the Increasing Participation in School Breakfast award.

The award was presented at the Southeast Region for Increased Participation in School Breakfast in Macon Ga. on September 26, 2012 at the School Nutrition Kickoff Luncheon.

Sonoraville Elementary School was one of four schools chosen from the Southeast Region.

In March 2011 SES implemented a “grab n go” cart at the car riders entrance of the school so as students come into school they could get breakfast and go directly to the cafeteria without the long wait in line, and participation has increased by 20 percent.

SES Cafeteria Manager Melissa Thomas implemented the program in March 2011 and says it was a way to keep the long lines down that often formed at breakfast time. Long lines would often deter students from eating breakfast over socializing with friends before school.

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for kids. It provides the necessary energy to get set for a day of learning and achievement,” said SES Principal Elizabeth Anderson. “Our goal was to provide every opportunity for each student at Sonoraville Elementary School to have a nutritious breakfast.”
