James C. Binnicker, a retired chief master sergeant of the Air Force and president and CEO of the Enlisted Village, has recruited four Calhoun residents: Gary Quarles, pastor of Boone Ford Baptist Church; John Joyave, CFO of AGC Pediatrics; and James Binnicker, Jr., director of DHS. Judi Binnicker of Calhoun will be running the 10K, but the three men will all run in the marathon.
Binnicker told his son James Binnicker, Jr. of Calhoun that he was looking for a few good people to recruit to run in this year’s United States Air Force Marathon & 10K, which will help raise money for the widows of military veterans.
“When my son, James, ran his first half marathon recently and I thought that this would be a good way to get him in shape and help support a good cause,” Binnicker said.
Both Joyave and Binnicker, Jr. have fathers who served as chief master sergeants in the military and agree that the charity is something they both take to heart.
“It’s about giving these women the dignity and the respect they deserve,” Binnicker, Jr. said.
The USAF Marathon & 10K will take place at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio on September 17.
“In the Air Force it was my job to take care of people and we were one big family, so now I work with widows of veterans whose loved ones have passed away,” Binnicker explained.
Binnicker said he would like to help anyone in the Northwest Georgia area that could benefit from the services that the Air Force Enlisted Village group offers for widows of veterans and they can visit www.afev.us for more information.
The four-member team has started training at Fitness First of Calhoun and can be seen running together around Calhoun. The friends will use the run as a stepping-stone for future marathons and fundraising efforts.
“When people see us around town running, feel free to honk your horns or show your support,” Binnicker, Jr said.
