Calhoun Mayor Jimmy Palmer and Gordon County Commissioner Alvin Long recently signed a proclamation declaring Sunday, Nov. 6, National Retired Educators Day in Calhoun and Gordon County. Representing the Calhoun Gordon Retired Educators Association were President Rosellen Burns, Public Relations Chair Netha Dunlap, Margaret Thornton, Sally Poole and Mary Ann Brooks.

The proclamation states,

“The retired educators of Georgia have donated thousands of hours of volunteer service and make invaluable contributions to the welfare of their respective communities across the state … We call upon the citizens of Gordon County to observe that day in an appropriate manner honoring retired educators.”

The proclamation continues with a request the local churches recognize these retired educators and the contributions they have made and continue to make for the betterment of human lives and society.

“Citizens of Georgia are grateful for the work done by retired educators around the state and nation. We commend them for their time and commitment to bettering our country. Therefore, I declare Nov. 6 as Retired Educators Day in Georgia … “

Also according to the proclamation:

”There are more than 89,000 retired educators in Georgia, 20,500 of who are members of the Georgia Retired Educators Association.”
