Sonoraville came from behind to win in dramatic and hard fought fashion improving their regular season record to 6-1.
Leading the way on the offense was Becca Cheeks and Taryn Hickey who had 8 points each while Kendall Bowman and Evie Delp contributed 6 points each.
Also scoring for the Lady Phoenix was Abby Connally and Erin Whitlock who both netted 2 points.
The bench for Sonoraville including: Aimee Pacheco, Delaney Bell and Emalie Hicks, provided key minutes off the bench as well, according to Sonoraville Girls Head Basketball Coach Matt Fox.
“We knew they (Cartersville) were good; I’d seen them place twice,” said Fox. “I’m very proud of the girls.”
In the second half, the Lady Phoenix played more like the Sonoraville everyone has came to know.
“We made the adjustments we had to at half time, and came out and played a whole lot better in the second half; we let them get back in the game” said Fox. “We rebounded better in the second half and our intensity was a whole lot better.”

Sonoraville, Calhoun both have success at Cartersville Duals
The Sonoraville Firebirds and the Calhoun Yellow Jackets hit the mats on Saturday at the Cartersville Hurricane Duals.
The Firebirds went 3-2 at the duals while Calhoun finished second in their pool and eighth overall.
Sonoraville lost to Gilmer County 73-13 and to Commerce 58-33. However, the Firebirds defeated Alatoona 51-48 and Adairsville 60-43. In the their last match of the Hurricane Duals, the Firebirds came from being behind by five points when Firebird, Nathan Holbert, (who was in for a sick teammate), pinned a wrestler from the Calhoun Yellow Jackets for the win defeating Calhoun 49-48.
Head Wrestling Coach David Bowers said that he is proud of the way the Firebirds played and they way they stepped up when they needed to.
“We had a few holes in the line up due to illness and injury; everyone wrestled well,” said Bowers. “The varsity guys need to push themselves harder than they are to keep getting better; I am very proud of the these kids who show up everyday and work hard, but we are going to have to pick up the tempo in practice and in matches.”
The Calhoun Yellow Jackets are improving with each match, and that is something that Head Wrestling Coach Steven Waters likes to see.
“There was some very stiff competition from schools like Cass, Bremen, Woodland, South Paulding, the Baylor School out of Tennessee, and what is often thought of as one of the premier programs in the State of Georgia, Jefferson,” said Waters. “The kids are improving every time they get on the mat; even in the matches that they lost, they learned a lot and came back in their next matches and made adjustments.”
Overall, Coach Waters is pleased with how his team conducted themselves on Saturday.
“The wrestlers did awesome,” said Waters. “I am very proud of them all.”
Jacob Callahan, Easton Trotter, Brandon Miller and Eduardo Aguilar all went 5-0 for the Yellow Jackets during the Hurricane Duals.
Thursday, Dec. 8
The Calhoun Lady Jackets defeated the South Central Lady Chieftains 54-9. The leading scorer for Calhoun were Ashlyn Barnes who had 10 points, 5 steals and 4 assists, Jana Johns who netted 10 points, 3 steals and 5 assists, Madeline Murray who had 10 points and 5 rebounds, and Sydnie Parker who finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Also scoring for the Lady Jackets Madison Green and Alexis Nalley who both netted 4 points and Morgan McDaniel, Madalyn Morrison and Brittanie Bakken who all had 2 points each.
The Ashworth Lady Warriors lost to the Woodland Lady Wildcats in a hard fought effort losing by a score of 26-14. Leading the way for Ashworth was Peyton Robinson who scored 10 points. Also scoring for Samantha Turner and Ashlyn Kelly who both swooshed 2 points each. Ashworth’s Girls Head Basketball Coach Melanie Moore noted that Baylee Blaylock “stepped in to spark the defense.”
The Ashworth Warriors team lost to the Woodland Wildcats 47-23. Scoring for the Warriors was Shy Williams who had 9 point. Seth Culpepper netted 5 points, Tijai Whatley finished with 4 points, Turner Seymore added 3 points and Ishmael Guevara grabbed a bucket.
Saturday, Dec. 10
The Sonoraville Lady Phoenix took down the Adairsville Lady Tigers on Saturday winning by a score of 18-13. The game was a defensive dominated dual and remained tied at 13 all late in the fourth quarter until Kendall Bowman for Sonoraville netted a huge three-pointer, which was followed by a clutch lay up from Taryn Hickey. Becca Cheeks led the way for the Phoenix with 6 points while teammate Abby Connally had 4 points. Sonoraville Head Basketball Coach Matt Fox added, “Evie Delp played her usual shutdown defense for all four quarters,” as well.
Meanwhile, the Boys team wouldn’t be out done by their lady counterparts defeating the Adairsville Tigers 46-44. In a back-and-fourth battle, the Phoenix game up the lead in the fourth quarter, but managed to win the game at the buzzer as Dylan Dixon shot a three-pointer to win the game as the clock was about the blow. Leading the scoring surge for Sonoraville was Jireh Wilson who finished with 26 points and Dylan Dixon who netted 11 points.
