It’s the rematch all of Calhoun and Gordon County wanted and expected.

The Sonoraville Lady Phoenix will battle the Calhoun Lady Yellow Jackets Saturday, Jan. 28, at 12:30 p.m. at Ashworth Middle School with the BGMSAA crown on the line.

Calhoun Lady Jackets vs. Adairsville Lady Tigers

The Calhoun Lady Yellow Jackets did not come on the court looking like the No. 1 seed on Wednesday afternoon, but pulled their game together in the second half to top the Lady Tigers, 31-24.

Leading the offensive boards for the Lady Jackets was Madeline Murray who netted 9 points and snagged 14 rebounds. Ashlyn Barnes scored 8 points while Sydnie Parker swooshed for 7 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Also scoring for Calhoun was Alexis Nalley who bagged 5 points, and Brittanie Bakken added 2 points.

Calhoun Girls Head Coach Diane Smith is looking for improvement in the finals.

“I feel really good about going into the finals,” said Smith. “We are going to have to cut down on the turnovers, make our lay ups and free throws.”

Sonoraville Lady Phoenix vs. Cartersville Lady Hurricanes

The Lady Phoenix hit the court with a mission on Wednesday evening, and they achieved their goal defeating Cartersville, 37-28.

Sonoraville got off to a slow start, but rallied with a 19 point fourth quarter to cap off the Lady Canes.

Driving the offense for the Lady Phoenix was Taryn Hickey who scored 11 points. Evie Delp netted 9 points, and Becca Cheeks contributed 8 points and led Sonoraville in rebounds. Kendall Bowman also swooshed two big 3-pointers, and Abby Connally netted 3 points.

“We didn’t play as well as we usually do in the first half,” said Sonoraville Girls Head Coach Matt Fox. “They are very coachable, and we made adjustments and came back in the fourth quarter, which is probably one of the best we’ve had all year.”

As far as the rematch in the finals with Calhoun, Fox is looking forward to the atmosphere.

“I wouldn’t want it any other way; it will be a packed gym,” said Fox. “They’re a great ball team, and Diane is a great coach; it should be a lot of fun.”
