Traditionally, the Cherokees in this area maintained extensive orchards, and the Indian Blood Cling peach, a variety not widely found in Georgia today, was the dominant fruit crop. In conjunction with the May 12 50th anniversary of New Echota becoming a State Historic Site, Friends of New Echota (FONE) is planning to recreate the well-documented historic peach orchard that once stood at Elias Boudinot’s 1830s era homestead.

Not only will the re-established orchard add a significant visual element to the historic interpretation of New Echota, it will also provide a unique educational perspective for the many children and adults who visit New Echota State Historic Site every year.

Any organization or individual wishing to help with the expense of the project is asked to make a monetary donation to Friends of New Echota, 1211 Chatsworth Hwy 225N, Calhoun, GA 30701. By doing so, the donor’s name will be included on signage that will be placed at the site to commemorate the historic 50th anniversary of New Echota as a State Historic Site and the donor’s participation as a valued supporter of New Echota.

Friends of New Echota State Historic Site (FONE) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to assist park staff with the planning, organization, and implementation of special events, promote public awareness of the New Echota State Historic Site as a significant and valuable historic resource, and increase public support of and involvement in the New Echota State Historic Site. FONE was established in 2009 and holds quarterly meetings, the 4th Thursday in January, April, July, and October.
