George Southgate, a local resident of Gordon County, has run a total of 125 marathons.

Southgate ran his first marathon in November 11, 1978 in Chattanooga Tennessee, and hasn’t stop running since.

He completed his one hundredth marathon back in November of 2011, which put him in the 100-marathon club, according to Southgate.

To date he explained he’s ran 125 marathons, and of the 125, he ran 21 of them were in 23 weeks.

Southgate said that he’s participated in marathons in 42 different states, and 25 of those states he’s ran a second marathon.

He named a few clubs that he is apart of, which along with the 100-marathon club include 50 State Marathon Club and Marathon Maniacs.

The Marathon Maniacs have 5000 members, and the 100-marathon club has 300 members, according to Southgate.

He referred to these clubs as a “running family,” and said he enjoyed participating in marathons because he gets to meet the family.

Along with getting to meet and enjoy the company of the family, he explained he also “loves to see the beautiful county that God has made, and enjoys getting to travel.”

He has no plans to stop running in the marathons anytime soon. He explained he has four more planned in the next few months.
