The first of three Jordon Pass-Wanda Westmoreland scholarships will go to Tyler West, a Calhoun High School student who will graduate in 2013.

Russell Pass is the founder of the scholarship, which awards one student from each Calhoun High School, Gordon Central High School and Sonoraville High School a $1,000 scholarship.

“The money goes to a student at each local high school,” Pass said.

The student was chosen as the Calhoun High School recipient, but there will be one chosen from Gordon Central and Sonoraville.

West had several recommendations from his teachers.

“Dr. Greg Stanley said he was a deserving kid,” Pass said.

Russell Pass is the father of Jordon Pass who committed suicide on Dec. 26, 2011. Pass said his son is the main reason he started the scholarship.

“I miss him very badly,” Pass said.

The scholarship is named after Wanda Westmoreland, because she was the principal when Jordon graduated. Pass said Wanda showed much compassion during the family’s time of loss.

“Wanda was Jordon’s high school principal when he graduated in 2010. Jordon was an office aid for Wanda, and she sent us a six-page letter telling us how much she loved Jordon,” Pass said.

The money for the scholarship comes from donation and fundraisers around the county.

Calhoun singer/songwriter Jule Medders performed at a concert to benefit the Jordan Pass Foundation on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Harris Arts Center. All proceeds will go to the Pass Foundation.

The other fundraiser is a four-person select shot golf tournament that will be held at Fields Ferry golf course on September 12.

Pass said he would like for participants to sign up as soon as possible so he can know how many goody bags to make up for the golfers.

The biggest donor to the scholarship so far has been Gordon Hospital, according to Pass, who says the hospital was a big support to the Pass family during their times of grievance.

“After Jordon died the hospital was wonderful. They donated about $800 to my family, because my wife wasn’t able to go back to work for a while,” Pass said.

To sign up for the golf tournament call Eric Stewart at the Fields Ferry pro shop at 706-625-9001.

The proceeds from the concert and Golf tournament will all go to the scholarship.
