Ashworth sixth grade students commenced their novel study of Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet by interacting with a guest speaker on Friday, October 12.

Dwight Payne, a resident of Rome, spoke about his multiple travels through the Canadian wilderness and Northern Territories, and to the Arctic Ocean.

The presentation allowed students to tie their language arts studies to social studies concepts such as Canadian climate and geography.

Students also were engaged by hands-on learning by experiencing items and materials necessary in a survival situation.
