The debut fundraiser is a full costume character ball for children and families who attend dressed as their favorite fairy tale or Disney character.
The event will feature live entertainment, a kid-friendly dinner buffet, a number of fun activities and a family dance.
Tickets are on sale now for $10 per person, regardless of age, at the Gordon County Chamber of Commerce, Harris Arts Center or Historic Downtown Depot.
Raffle tickets are also on sale, with the prize being a $2,500 voucher for a Disney Cruise or Disney Trip. The trip is available through Sandventurescapes Travel, owned and operated by local educators Bill and Christina Long.
“The Council has worked hard to plan and present this fundraiser, which we hope will become a legacy event. It will include fun and entertaining activities for both boys and girls, so all the little princesses and pirates should have a great time,” said Joni Harbin, Executive Director. “We timed this event to launch National Family Literacy Month and plan to present other programs throughout November.”
The Fork Restaurant (formerly known as Fork in the Road Diner) will cater the event, providing a kid-friendly buffet attended by a costumed server. Co-owner Gray Bridges will present the buffet, which features food choices and decorations tied to literacy. The buffet will be served in the Harris Arts Center Community Room.
Guests will enter the Harris Arts Center, where a lighted Cinderella Carriage complete with formally dressed attendants will provide rides. A special welcome event will be presented at the entrance. Inside the Harris Arts Center theatre, costumed entertainers will perform Disney classics or interact with the guests as they dance and play. Characters slated to appear include Belle, Beast, Snow White, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Captain Hook, Aladdin and Jasmine, Peter Pan an Tinker Bell, but the performance roster is subject to change.
The fundraising committee includes Kim Brazell, Director of Marketing with Gordon Hospital, Coleen Brooks with Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s Adult Learning Center; Gloria Cooley, Advertising Sales Manager for WJTH Radio; Dr. Amy Parker with Gordon County Schools and Gordon County College & Career Academy; Suzanne Roland, Director of the Downtown Development Authority and Dr. Michele Taylor, Superintendent of Calhoun City Schools.

The Calhoun-Gordon Council for a Literate Community is a member agency of United Way of Gordon County.
“One of our missions is to encourage and promote family literacy, especially in young learners, and we think that putting them in a room filled with their favorite characters is a big step in that direction. Anything that makes a child happy about reading and learning with their parents is a tremendous positive,” said Harbin.“Parents—especially mothers—exert the most single important influence on a child’s attitudes about reading and learning, which is why National Family Literacy Month exists in the first place.”
