Local veterans have recently donated a state flag and an American flag to Sonoraville High School to be flown at the school.

The American flag was donated by the American Legion Auxiliary of Calhoun and the new State flag was donated by Post 47 of the American Legion.

The JROTC Phoenix battalion will raise and lower the flags, proudly, each day as a salute to our country and those that serve it.

Not only are Veterans constantly at work within the Gordon County and Calhoun communities, Sunday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, is a chance for the community to give back to them.

Tomorrow will begin a day of remembrance and thanks for all the men and women who have served in the armed forces. 94 years ago, tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, the Armistice was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, bringing WWI hostilities to an end.

Initially enacted by Congress as Armistice Day, in 1938, the celebratory day was soon changed to Veterans Day, following all the wars fought after WWI to honor all Veterans who have served in the armed forces. Veterans Day was officially declared a national holiday celebrated on Nov. 11, by President Gerald. R. Ford in 1975.

The tradition of honoring local hometown heroes and all others who have served continues again this year in Gordon County on Sunday.

Some services were conducted before the celebratory day, such as the Patriot’s Fire event, on Thursday, Nov. 1, which featured a young Captain sharing his stories of suffering and miraculously recuperating following brain injuries sustained during battle.

On Friday, Gordon Central High School hosted a “Salute to Hometown Heroes,” and invited all veterans and their families to attend. The service was put on to thank Veterans for their service to the United States.

Local VFW posts and American Legions are hosting Veterans Day meals and services for members and veterans.

In honor of Veterans Day, the local Gem Theater is hosting the Harris Arts Center’s Big Band Series, featuring the Etowah Jazz Society, Sunday. The group will perform a variety of music including WWII and 40’s era tunes in commemoration of the day. Also, tickets will be on sale for veterans in attendance. For tickets, contact 706-625-3132.

Additionally, the Calhoun Premium Outlet’s will host a Veterans Day Sale in commemoration of the day.

Veterans Day is a day reserved throughout history to honor and thank the men and women who sacrifice so much with their service in the armed forces.
