Two Gordon Central High student athletes have been asked to participate on the United States Track and Field Team in the Down Under Games in Australia during the summer of 2013.

Senior Haley Reynolds will be competing in the discus and shot put, while sophomore Nolan Swaim will be running the 800 meters and race as a member of the medley relay team.

The athletes qualified to compete this summer in the Down Under Games because of their performances in the Georgia State Track and Field Championships in May 2012. Reynolds was the Georgia State Champion in both the shot put and the discus.

Swaim placed sixth in the 800 meters and competed on the 1600 relay. In addition, Swaim placed second in the 5-AAA Region Cross Country Meet in November. Both girls currently hold, and have broken their own, school records. They will be on the 2013 West Central Conference Track and Field Team representing the state of Georgia.

This honor and opportunity does not come cheap, so the girls will be fundraising throughout the school year. One of the fundraisers is a 2013 team t-shirt. These shirts sell for $20 apiece.

They are also looking for corporate sponsors. If you would like to donate to their trip, please contact them at Gordon Central or make your donation at www.downundersports.com. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these young athletes.

International Sports Specialists, Inc. (ISSI) hosts the annual Down Under Sports Tournaments which provide a forum for athletes from other countries to compete head to head in the sport they love. The Down Under Sports Tournaments have included competition in football, cheerleading, basketball, volleyball, golf, cross-country, track and field, free style wrestling and swimming. ISSI’s goal is to continue to provide athletes who excel in their sport the opportunity to experience the culture, beauty and grandeur of the land Down Under all within the framework of spirited and intense competition in many different sports.

Please help support these two young ladies as they represent Calhoun, Gordon County and the United States in this great opportunity.
