Contributions and campaign meeting are still in progress as United Way of Gordon County works to meet the $550,000.00 goal.

With several businesses and organizations still waiting for results, the 2013 campaign is at 80 percent of the goal. Last year the goal was reached in time to report the success of the 2012 campaign during the final performance of Mohawk Presents Calhoun’s Dancing with the Stars.

For the last two campaigns 2011 and 2012 Gordon County has contributed and the $500,000 goal was met and exceeded both years.

That accomplishment was made possible from all the citizens in the community providing funds for the 18 United Way agencies in Gordon County.

Though the economy seems to be coming back slowly, people are still out of work and many depend on the resources from these agencies.

The Community Kitchen at the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) provides hot meals every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Guests are lined up before 11 a.m. for the opportunity to receive a free hot meal.

According the VAC Director Stacy Long, approximately 80-100 people eat each day. The food is provided by many volunteers from the community, church groups as well as the VAC.

Homelessness remains a big issue in Gordon County. The Bridge continues working with families with children to find affordable housing. Prevent Child Abuse Gordon County and the Domestic Violence Outreach Office are two organizations that are protecting children and families as well as offering support programs for the community.

Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, City and County Recreation Departments, Camp New Adventure, Special Olympics, LEJO, and the Winners Club work everyday to provide children with safe and appropriate activities. These organizations focus on leadership skills, goal setting, and community involvement. These focus areas are in place to assist with the success of all children in an effort to provide them with the tools they need to break the cycle of poverty that some experience everyday.

Individuals, businesses, and organizations that have contributed this year to United Way of Gordon County are listed below. Thanks to these contributions and others yet to come, the 18 United Way agencies will continue to work for the Gordon County community.

Please send tax deductible contributions to United Way of Gordon County P.O. Box 486 Calhoun, Ga. or for credit card contributions go to www.gordoncountyunitedway.org
