As you drive Past the Mapco on Highway 41 in Adairsville you can see the destruction that was left behind from the tornado that came through Wednesday.

There was a path of devastation left as the tornado destroyed houses, business and cars that were in its path.

“I started screaming “run, run, run” we had about four customers in here and we were shoving people into the bathrooms,” Joseph Summerfield said.

Summerfield owns the Gold and Guns pawn shop on 41, which was just outside of the tornados path.

He told his youngest daughter when he picked her up from school that the clouds that were in the sky were the type of clouds that caused tornados.

Joseph’s middle daughter was on her way to school when he called her and told her to get back.

He was with his three daughters and a few customers when the tornado touched down.

“We all walked in and the lights went down, the doors flew open and you could hear it roaring,” Joseph’s youngest daughter McKenzie Summerfield said.

Joseph said he started telling everyone in the store to get into the bathroom and get down, and about that time he said it got real black and you couldn’t see anything.

“It lasted like 30 seconds, but it felt like forever,” the Summerfield family said.

Joseph said he was one of the lucky ones.

“I seen a guy across the street get pulled from his room and it threw him through the air butt naked, when it was over he was trying to get up and he was bleeding and a neighbor saw him and helped him get back to his place,” Joseph said.

Jason Paulk is a resident of Adairsville and lives on Summer St., which is one of the roads that had major damage from the tornado that passed through.

He said he was sitting inside on the computer when his walls started to shake.

Paulk looked outside and caught a glimpse of the tornado that touched down. He said all he heard was a large roaring and trees crashing down around him.

After it passed he tried to run outside to check on his neighbors to make sure they were all okay, and he saw the destruction that was caused from the tornado.

According to Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), a Boil Water Advisory was issued for the city of Adairsville.

As of 1 p.m. Thursday GEMA confirmed there had been one fatality in Adairsville, and nine injured following the tornado.

Emergency responders opened an emergency shelter at the Manning Mill Recreation Center for people that were affected by the storm.

The National Weather Service had not confirmed the size of the tornado as of print time on Thursday, but three survey crews had been dispatched to investigate damage.
