Ashworth Middle School eight grader Caitlin Stewart spelled the word “delved” to take the win at the 2013 Gordon County Spelling Bee at the Harris Arts Center Thursday.

Wayne Minshew presented words to one student from each elementary and middle school in Gordon County who were vying for a chance to compete at the district spelling bee in Rome on February 23.

The students began with words such as tack, strong and large, and as the competition became fierce several rounds later, students were given words such as mortar, cleave and widget.

Amidst tears of excitement, Stewart was awarded a trophy and a certificate by Laura Harrell, spelling bee director.
