The Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) students of Sonoraville High School are rising up to help those in our community. They are hosting a 5k run/walk on the Sonoraville School campus this Saturday as a recovery effort for those impacted by the January 30th tornado.

Master Sergeant Sean Allen, Senior Army instructor for Sonoraville High School has been overseeing the project. “Our students asked us, ‘What can we do to help?’ This was their idea from the beginning and the other instructor and I just guided them through process.”

“This program is based on leadership and character. In times of crisis leadership emerges and that is just what these students are doing,” he said.

Allen stated that the Sonoraville High School JROTC is a great and unique group of students. “We have students from all classes from Freshman to Senior involved,” Allen said.

“The 5k is an opportunity for cohesion-open to the community to bring us all together with the spirit of getting out of this through running/walking.”

The event will take place 9 a.m. Saturday, March 2 at Sonoraville High School. A registration fee of $5 is all that is required to enter the run. All the proceeds will go to tornado relief in Gordon County and donations are accepted. JROTC students encourage everyone in the community to come out and walk or run for the event.

“This is a great opportunity to show your support for our local community and do something healthy for yourself at the same time,” said Adrienne Boyd Gable, Gordon County resident and Calhoun chapter leader for the running group Moms Run This Town.

“It’s easy to forget the amount of work that needs to be done and the number of people that still need your help. This is a great way for our community to come together and remind those affected that we have not forgotten about them."

Members of Moms Run This Town will be there to show their support and hope that other organizations and the community as a whole will come out and exercise for the cause.
