Deputy Shelley of the Gordon County Sheriff’s Department probably didn’t plan on working while off duty when he stopped at the Kangaroo on Highway 53 on March 3.

While he was at the store he and three other witnesses noticed John Soms Prades, 41, of Fairmount driving recklessly trying to turn into the Kangaroo, according to an incident report from the Calhoun Police Department.

“All three witnesses stated that they observed Prades slam on his brakes on Highway 53 when he missed the turn into the kangaroo, back up and then pull in running over the curb,” Officer Nicholson of the CPD wrote in his incident report.

The witnesses observed Prades get out of his vehicle and stagger into the store.

As he was coming out of the store off duty Deputy Shelley advised him that he was a deputy with the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office as he tried to stop Prades from driving.

“Shelley stated that he (Prades) tried to get away and get into the vehicle and started fighting him. Shelley stated that he was able to get Prades on the ground and hold him there until we arrived,” Nicholson wrote in the incident report.

He added, “Pardes was unsteady on his feet, had slurred speech and blood shot and glassy eyes. I read Prades Georgia Implied Consent Law and he refused.”

Nicholson placed Prades in the back of his patrol car and transported him to the Gordon County Jail.

According to Nicholson, Prades cursed and yelled on the way to the jail, and after being advised on what he had been charged with he continued to ask multiple times.
